System Hangs Up After Loading Windows 95

Problem :

Some users have their system hanging up after installing the new SBIDE driver for Windows 95. The cause of the problem was due to the fact that two copies of the SBIDE drivers (SBIDE.SYS & SBIDE.MPD) were loaded in memory. During upgrading of Windows 95, the DOS driver for Creative IDE CDROM drives (SBIDE.SYS) was not disabled. This driver is still active in the CONFIG.SYS file. When Windows 95 starts, it will attempt to load the real-mode device drivers specified in the CONFIG.SYS file; after loading the real-mode drivers (eg. SBIDE.SYS), it then proceeds to load its 32-bit drivers, in this case, the SBIDE.MPD driver. Loading both of these two drivers will cause Windows 95 to stop responding in the Desktop - thus hanging up the system.

Solution :

This problem can be solved by any of the following:

a. REMARK out the line that loads SBIDE.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS file for users who do not need to "Reboot in MS-DOS MODE".

Or

b. Disable the loading of SBIDE.MPD driver by removing the "Creative IDE CDROM interface" from the Device Manager for user who need to "Reboot in MS-DOS MODE".

Or

c. Set up a multi-boot config, so that SBIDE.SYS only gets loaded when booting up to DOS and not Windows 95.
