MIDI Setup of the Sound Blaster AWE32
by Ng Cheng Kiang
Here are 6 simple steps which will help you connect your MIDI keyboard to the
AWE32. You will first have to get the Sound Blaster MIDI Adapter Cable
before proceeding.
- On your MIDI keyboard, you will see at least two 5-pin MIDI ports, labelled
MIDI IN and MIDI OUT. On some keyboards, you will also see a MIDI THRU, but we
won't touch on that for the moment. The ports usually look like this:
- Connect the 15-pin D connector to the joystick/MIDI connector of your AWE32,
as shown in the example below.
- On the other end of the adaptor cable, you will find two 5-pin MIDI connectors
marked IN and OUT. Connect the one marked "OUT" to the MIDI IN of your keyboard,
and the one marked "IN" to the MIDI OUT of your keyboard.
- Set your keyboard to MIDI mode. You'll have to refer to your manual to see
how this is done as it varies from keyboard to keyboard.
- On your MIDI Sequencer software, select "SB16 MIDI IN" as the MIDI Input
device, and select "Sound Blaster AWE32 MIDI Synth" as the MIDI Output port.
Alternatively, if you want to use the sounds from your keyboard, you should select "SB16 MIDI Out".
You are now ready to jam in MIDI!
