Poor Performance Reading VideoCD With IDE CD-ROM Drive
Problem:
Data transfer can occur very slowly when you are using an IDE CD-ROM drive
to playback VideoCD in Windows 95 if the following conditions are true:
- The IDE CD-ROM drive is configured as SLAVE on an IDE channel with
another device (such as harddisk) configured as MASTER on the chain.
- You are using a PROTECTED-MODE driver in Windows 95 to access IDE drives,
including the IDE CD-ROM drive.
For example, when playing a VideoCD your computer seems to stop responding due to
the slow data transfer rate.
Cause:
There is a problem in the current version of IOS.VXD that causes excessive
seeking on data requests from the CD-ROM drive. This results in the
degradation in the data transfer rate from the CD-ROM drive.
Solution:
Microsoft has released an updated version of the IOS.VXD file that corrects
the problem. You will be able to obtain the file from their web site
www.microsoft.com.
