REBEL ASSAULT II

THE sequel to one of the biggest-ever selling CD-ROMs is here, and it’s a beauty. Rebel Assault 2 once again provides an incredible Star Wars experience.

The plot of Rebel 2 follows on from the first game, with you controlling Rookie One, a young hot-shot Rebel pilot. Darth Vader and the evil Empire have created a secret weapon to wipe out the Rebels, and you must help uncover its mysterious properties.

The game's strength is its incredible graphics. Amazingly, the quality of the visuals are improved over the first game, giving it an amazing film-like appearance. All the Star Wars characters and ships are totally authentic and Rebel 2 boasts the first real Star Wars filming since Return of the Jedi.

The game is split across 15 levels, and has plenty of variety. Flying missions include taking on TIE Fighters, dodging asteroids and flying the Millennium Falcon through tunnels, while on-foot missions have you infiltrating enemy installations and battling Storm Troopers.

When you've managed to successfully complete a mission, you’re treated to brilliant full-motion video segments which slowly reveal the plot.

A new feature is that the game is entirely customisable. Apart from the usual "beginner to hard" difficulty settings, you can choose a custom mode to change variables as enemy numbers and gun hits. This really adds to the long term appeal as you can make each mission as easy or difficult as you wish.

Like the first game, Rebel Assault 2 is an arcade-style romp that can be picked up and enjoyed straight away. All you need is a steady hand and a good joystick.

If you believed the shoot-'em-up action was too shallow in the first game, you won't like the sequel. Underneath the glitz, Rebel 2 is still a duck-shoot game where you are limited to very little control over your fighter.

But if you love getting immersed in the Star Wars universe and enjoy mindless blasting, you'll love Rebel Assault 2. It's a showcase roller-coaster ride that sets new standards in quality and presentation.
