Overview

The InContext WebAnalyzer report is divided into the following six areas.

1. How to use this report:

This hypertext link takes you to this document.

2. Root document:

This hypertext link takes you to a profile on the root document that was the starting point for the analysis. The root document is the Web page address you typed into the URL box in the WebAnalyzer and it's the center file (node) in the WaveFront view. The root document's profile contains the following information:

Profile:

A. Root document

- document title
- URL (World Wide Web address)
- WWW hypertext link A hypertext link to the original root document on the World Wide Web (WWW).
- Hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to a copy of the root document on your computer. The local copy was created when you clicked on the Make Local Site button Make Local Site Icon in the WebAnalyzer. If you're analyzing your own site you may not wish to create a duplicate of the files. But if you want to save money by surfing off-line, you can use the Make Local Site option to download other Websites to your own computer.

B. Other access points:

- If the root document has other access points they will appear here. These hypertext links take you to profiles on other URLs which can also be used to access the root document. For example: http://www.incontext.ca/spidweb/ may be the root document, but the root document can also be reached by using this URL: http://www.incontext.ca/spidweb/index.html.

C. Statistics:

- File size: The file size is determined by the server, but not every server reports this number. If that's the case, you'll see question marks beside File size in the profile report.
- Download size: The actual size of the file the server sent. If the File size and Download size are different it may indicate a problem with the server.
- Processed: Refers to the date and time the file (node) was processed. By processed, we mean the WebAnalyzer has looked at the URL and contacted the server. It may have downloaded a copy of the URL or taken some information from the site.
- Date last modified: Refers to the date and time the file (node) was last modified.

D. Excerpts:

- Displays the document's title and the first lines of text.

E. Links from this Document

-WWW hypertext linkA hypertext link to any World Wide Web file that is linked from the root document.
-hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to any local copy of a file that is linked from the root document.
- image icon Thumbnail view of any picture that is linked fromthe root document.
- A hypertext linkto a profile on any file that is linked from the root document. The profile includes a similar set of file information as outlined in the root document profile.

The profiles on the files (nodes) are grouped according to their depth from the root document and their file type. For example, the profile for a node that appears in the third circle in the WaveFront View, will be grouped under Documents: Level 3 in the profile section.

NOTE: The hypertext link to a profile will either be a file's name, if it's available, or its URL. For example: filename:The Spider's Web: Design Column or for example: URL: http://www.incontext.ca/spidweb/noah.gif (an image in a .gif format)

F. Links to this Document

-hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to a local copy of any file that is linked to the root document.
- image icon Thumbnail view of any picture that is linked tothe root document.
- A hypertext link to a profile on any file that is linked to the root document.

3. Summary statistics of analyzed Website

It's not as exciting as a baseball stats card, but you will find a table containing the following information:

- File type: documents, pictures, audio, videos, FTP, Gopher, and mail
- Number of : documents, pictures, audio, videos, FTP, Gopher and mail
- Byte size of: documents, pictures, audio and videos

4. Problems

There are two main potential problem areas the WebAnalyzer reports.

Broken Links: This section of the report lists invalid links, but it doesn't tell you what's wrong with the links, just that they're invalid. It's up to you to determine the problems. Sometimes the URL may be incorrect, or the link may refer to a remote file that was moved. Some sites may contain links that are secure. These may be reported as broken because the analyzer will not be able to access them. Other times a link may be invalid because it uses a local pathname. You can examine these broken links in two ways.

By Links:

-Hypertext link to the WWW A hypertext link to any World Wide Web broken link.
- A hypertext link to a profile on any broken link.

By Document:

- Hypertext link to WWWA hypertext link to any World Wide Web document that contains a broken link or any broken link.
- Hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to a local copy of any document that contains a broken link.
- Ahypertext link to a profile on any document that contains a broken link and to a profile on any broken link. These profiles include a similar set of file information as outlined in the root document profile.

Duplicated documents and media files: Lists any repeated files which may be wasting space.

-Hypertext link to WWW A hypertext link to any World Wide Web duplicated document or media file.
-Hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to a local copy of any duplicated document or media file.
- image icon Thumbnail view of any duplicated picture.
- A hypertext link to a profile on any duplicated document or media file.

5. Tested Links

This refers to documents, pictures, and other media links that the WebAnalyzer has processed and tested. Processed means the WebAnalyzer has looked at the URL and contacted the server. It may have downloaded a copy of the URL or taken some information from the site.By tested, we mean the WebAnalyzer has determined whether any links are broken. The WebAnalyzer has also determined the file's MIME type.

You'll notice each list of tested documents, pictures or other media links is divided by horizontal rulers. Each ruler represents a new document level starting from the root document (level 0) onward.

-Hypertext link to the WWW A hypertext link to any World Wide Web tested document, picture or other media link.
-Hypertext link to local system A hypertext link to a local copy of any tested document, picture or other media link.
- image icon Thumbnail view of any tested picture.
- Ahypertext link to a profile on a document, picture or other media link.

6. Untested Links

This refers to documents, pictures and other media links the WebAnalyzer has processed but not tested. This means the WebAnalyzer hasn't determined whether the links are broken.

It also includes two special categories of untested links: unknown links and unprocessed links. Unknown links means the WebAnalyzer has processed the files (nodes), but doesn't know their MIME type. Unprocessed links means the WebAnalyzerhasn't processed the links, but knows about them because they have been referenced from some file (node) in the report.

The Untested link section also lists any Mail, FTP and Gopher links that appear in the analysis.

You'll notice that each list of untested links is divided by horizontal rulers. Each ruler represents a new document level starting from the root document (level 0) onward.

- Hypertext link to WWW A hypertext link to any World Wide Web untested document, picture, other media file, unknown links, unprocessed links, Mail, FTP and Gopher.
- A local hypertext link to a profile on an untested document, picture or other media link.
